Today, "we" celebrate Queen's Day. For the non-Dutchies among you, it means basically that two thirds of the Dutch walk around in the big cities, (nearly) drunk, dressed in orange shirts, skirts, trousers,... you name it. I saw the weirdest hats, sunglasses and accessories today. I wrote "we" and not we without parentheses, because although I've been living in Holland for almost ten years now, I still feel foreign sometimes, as for example on a day like today. I wasn't dressed in orange, for that matter, nor was I wearing any funny gadgets. I did enjoy the atmosphere, though.
Still, I felt like an outsider. I'm not "one of them", and the question is: Is that a bad thing, or a good thing? Anyway, I'm still Belgian, but sometimes I feel Dutch. And that is not always a good thing. But is it any better to be Belgian? I doubt it. I mean, my country is a very complicated one. It has three official languages - right, Dutchies, three, not two as the majority of you think ;) - and probably therefore is so incredibly incoherent. We are not ONE, while I have the impression that in the Netherlands, people act more together and there is less rivalry. In Belgium, we not only have the cultural difference between the Flemings and the Walloons, but there's also the language problem. I regret the fact that the majority of the Walloons see Dutch as an inferior language. The consequence is that they refuse to speak it, even in a big city like Brussels. And that's a pity, for it shows that there is little respect from the French speaking community for the Dutch speaking community. So I'm not proud of being a Belgian, and that's what makes me toy with the idea of becoming Dutch. It shouldn't be that complicated. I'm a European citizen and I've been living here for almost 10 years. I speak the language, although maybe with a funny accent I can't hide. I don't need a citizenship course, although I'll have to do something about my distaste of cheese, liquorice and treacle waffles ;) But I hate bureaucracy, and I'm afraid it will take a lot of paperwork, let alone money, to become a Dutch citizen.
Why would I want to become Dutch anyway? I do like the majority of my Dutch friends, but some Dutch people can be so rude sometimes, even people you don't know at all. They have no fear of asking you direct questions or telling you you're doing something wrong (in their opinion that is, and sometimes it makes sense, but not always). We Belgians stick more to ourselves. We are more modest, I think, and that can be a bad thing, too, I realise that. We don't always say what we think. Also, I think we are more polite than the Dutch. Still, I admire the country I'm living in in many ways. On a day like today, you see the oneness, the solidarity among people. Everyone is having a good time, and they don't begrudge each other. In Belgium, there is a lot of rivalry among the provinces, especially when it comes to the different dialects we speak. And I don't like that at all. I really hate it when people discriminate each other or make fun of each other because of the fact that they speak different dialects or come from other provinces and thus have different backgrounds.
In fact, when I think about it, I'd better become a mix of a Belgian and a Dutch person. Fact is that here in the Netherlands, people see me as a Belgian, and back home, family and friends see me as Dutch. So I'm having this small identity crisis right now. I admire the Belgians for their courage and their motivation to accomplish things, but I admire the Dutch for their oneness and their sincerity. So, people, what should I do? Have you got any suggestions? One thing for sure is that I'll just stay myself. Maybe that helps. And one day, I'll figure out what I want. One day, I'll make up my mind. Promised.
This blog will hopefully help me to cope with my life and the world around me. I hope I can inspire at least someone by posting something every once in a while. Posts will mostly be in English or in Spanish, while Flemish - a dialect of Dutch - is my native language. However, I don't expect to have many visitors if I write in Dutch and I have to admit that sometimes, I can even better express my feelings in a foreign language...

Meet Chico!
I've always been an animal lover. Especially dogs and birds attract me. I'm not a cat lover, though, and I assume that's because of my neverending love for birds, especially parakeets and parrots. I got my first parakeet when I was about 12 years old, a present from my grandparents. Unfortunately, Prutske - stupid name, I know, but it's like a standard name for parakeets in Belgium - chose freedom instead of spending the rest of his life with me when I made an unforgivable mistake. He flew away when I was just about to show a trick I'd taught him to my brother-in-law. I went after him - Prutske, that is, not my brother-in-law - but he hid at the rooftops of neighbouring houses, and it became dark and... Well, I tried everything, but he chose his own fate.
Let me tell you about my history with parakeets for I've had quite a few of them: Prutske II was an exact copy of Prutske I and shared 8 years of my life. Then there was Pikootje, who spent not even a year with me and died a sudden death, followed by Pimbootje, who was my loyal friend for over two years. Pimbootje died on a Saturday morning, and I was with her until that last moment. She died in my hands...
And then there was Chico. I got a phone call from my aunt, the day after Pimbootje had died, that she had a new parakeet for me. I didn't know what to think of it. Wasn't it too soon to accept a new one in my life? But... when I saw this wonderful birdy, I immediately fell in love with him. It was love at first sight! Look at his big baby bird eyes and his pink baby bird nose:
Now we've been together for more than 6 years. This bird has changed my life. He's so loyal, he is truly the best friend you can imagine. He comforts me when I'm sad and shares my happy moments enthusiastically. He's just a mini human being. This is how he looks like nowadays:
Chico is not just my fifth parakeet, he's extremely special. He talks. He speaks Dutch AND Spanish. Of course, he also speaks parakeetish, which means that he talks and he talks, but you don't understand a word of it ;) You do hear that his intonation is Dutch, though. Unfortunately, it's not easy to tape him. He doesn't like it. I do have a few movies, and I want to share this one with you. You'll see that he just loves to play with anything. He's less exigent than small children, he never gets tired of his "toys" ;) Oh yes, he likes it when you imitate his sounds. He can go on until eternity, he never gets tired of that game. I, however... ;)
And if you really want to hear some parakeetish, here you go:
You might be asking yourself why I'm moving that bottle all the time. Well, it's that simple: the movement of the bottle is the trigger for Chico to start talking ;) I have no idea why he has that habit, but it works, and that's what counts, right?
Chico is very important in my life. I know I should be blogging about other things than pets, but he makes this tough life bearable every now and then. Maybe you don't believe me, but that's just the way it is. And I'm so happy with him and hope he'll spend many more years with me...
How important are your pets for you? Please let me know, I'm eager to know!

So... this is it!
Actually, it's a bit funny writing this entry, because there's nobody who's going to read it ;) Anyway, I have to make a start, right? It's just that I still have to figure out how I can design my blog and elaborate it a little bit, because right now it doesn't look like I'd expected.
I've been thinking about this for a long time. I was inspired by http://rcbenglishclass.blogspot.com/, Randy's website. Randy is my English teacher - and believe me, he's the best English teacher in the universe, including the black holes ;) - so I hope I can make him proud by producing a flawless first entry on this blog. Well, almost flawless then ;) Besides that, I really have to improve my English if I want to be a teacher at a bilingual or international school, and you can only improve if you practice a lot. However, Spanish, my second language, will also appear in some of my posts. That's because I adore that language, and although I've never been to Latin America or Spain for a long time, I speak it fluently and I enjoy speaking it. I don't like Dutch (or Flemish if you want), because it sounds horrible. Same counts for German if you ask me. Ow, what about preconceptions...
It's getting late. I should try to get some sleep. To be continued...
